There are plenty of definitions of NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming. What matters more is what those words actually mean in practice. For you. In your everyday life. The essence of NLP is:
GIVING THE BRAIN DIRECTION WITH WORDS
Neuro > the brain
Linguistic > with words
Programming > giving direction
By giving your brain direction with words, something wonderful happens: you gain the freedom to make your own choices. Your own choices. Not those of your parents, your partner, your manager, colleagues or friends. How often do you let others guide you when making choices? More often than you might think ...
Yet whether or not you make your own choices has big consequences. You want to decide which direction your life and work take, don't you? Being able to choose also means being flexible. Being able to act, think, see and feel in a new way. The way of your choosing.
A little example:
You can choose to see the positive in a situation you would automatically describe as ‘negative’. Say, for instance, that you lose your job. You can look at this differently by deciding “Hey, this happened to me, I didn't expect it, but you know what? I've learnt something important. This is new information, because I now realise ... ". Fill it in yourself. Once you get going with your list, you'll realise you can take plenty of positives from every situation. All you need to do is make sure you become aware of them.
Or perhaps you recognise this situation: you put yourself down by thinking 'I'm not <fill in yourself> enough for <fill in yourself>. So you can decide, here and now, to think something else.
What would it be like to consciously believe, think, feel and communicate with your whole body that you have all the resources within you to develop your strengths and talents?
That's your choice. The moment you give your brain direction in that way, you suddenly start to see new possibilities and solutions. How wonderful is that? Once again: you choose. You decide how you want to stand in life.
And good to know: this process unfolds step by step. The more you practise, the easier it gets. Until it becomes your natural way of living.
We first practise together with NLP techniques, and you receive tools to keep going on your own afterwards.
In the process of realising, step by step, that you make your own choices, you suddenly realise something else too: you can no longer blame anyone else for the choices you make. You are no longer a victim. You increasingly lose the feeling that things just happen to you. How could they: you are free to make your own choices.
But what if you make the ‘wrong’ choice? The good news is: there are no wrong choices. A different choice is always possible. Always.
Because don't forget: you choose the words with which you give your brain direction.
